I’ve been praising Ray for years. In fact, his 2006m album “Till The Sun Turns Black” was my favorite album that year. His third album “Gossip In The Grain” was kind of a disappointment to me. Thankfully, on this new one, Ray has returned to form.
Mr. LaMontagne and his Band – The Pariah Dogs – holed up in his house in Massachusetts for two weeks and recorded the whole album by themselves – breaking away from longtime producer Ethan Johns. Overall, the album has a looser feel than his other works. Rough around the edges. Slightly playful but not jolly. Ray unmistakable voice is the focus of the album. Lyrically, Ray sticks to the human condition. And the instrumentation is straight folk-rock/Americana, complete with harmonic! His best work in years.
wish I could hear a track – he has a high standing in the Duke-court and I know little of his music. I’ve heard music students drop his name…if you’d like to personally share a track email me at my personal email which is coconutandtheduke@gmail.com
